One of the very best things about Austin is Amy’s Ice Cream. I’ve been going there since I was TEEEENSYTINY, when it was next to Toy Joy in the little art-deco center on Guadalupe. When Andrew and I got married in 2001, we went to Amy’s while still in wedding dress and tuxedo on the way to our honeymoon. Amy’s is wonderful, and so very Austin. We love it.
Part of the reason we love it so are because they’re willing to do goofy things like this on a regular basis.

Every Amy’s has a little chalkboard where they have a movie quote of the day. If you know what movie the quote’s from, you get a free yummy thing in your ice cream. We asked them to change it to “Hey Charley, want to be a godfather?” Clearly, they had a bit of fun with it. And had to explain to people until one in the afternoon that it wasn’t actually from a movie. I believe they were telling everyone that it was “in production,” which works for sure.
He said yes, by the way! And got free ice cream to boot.
